چکیده

Address for Correspondence: Dr. Poornima B, Assistant Professor, Department of Anatomy, Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Ballari, Karnataka, India. E-Mail: [email protected] Background: Femur is the long bone of thigh. Femur is richly vascularized bone deriving its arterial input from umpteen vessels. The upper end of the femur in general showed rich vascularization. Objectives: To observe the location or distribution of vascular foramina, to quantify the number of vascular foramina, to measure the size of the vascular foramina, to observe the direction of the vascular foramina in different segments of upper end of femur bones. Materials and Methods: The present study was undertaken on 100 dry adult normal human femur bones of both sides, irrespective of sex. The bones were obtained from the Department of Anatomy, S.S.I.M.S. & RC Davangere, Karnataka, India. Results: In the present study, maximum average number of vascular foramina was observed in the neck posterior region and minimum average number of vascular foramina was observed in head. Size of vascular foramina varies from > 1.27mm to < 0.71 mm. Maximum average number of vascular foramina were directed horizontally. Interpretation and Conclusion: Knowledge of vascular anatomy is helpful in early identification of vascular interruptions leading to osteonecrosis.

A Survey on Morphometry and Topography of Nutrient Foramina and Measurement of Other Anthropometric Parameters in Human Femora and Tibiae: A Descriptive Study

Background and Objectives: Measuring the dimensions of bones is essential from the perspective of surgery related to bones and joints. The position of the nutrient foramen and the bones' dimensions vary in different populations. The aim of this study was to determine some anthropometric dimensions and topography of nutrient foramina in the femora and tibiae. Materials and Methods: In this desc...

Morphometric Analysis of Accessory Sutural Bones Association With Parietal Emissary Foramina

Background: The sutural bones and fontanelle of the skull display unique morphological characters. Sutural bones are also called supernumerary bones or ossicles or Wormian bones (WB). These are irregular and develop from the independent ossification centers present along the cranial sutures. They appear on periosteal and endosteal surfaces of the skull with variations in size, number, shape, an...

Vascular Foramina of Scaphoid and its Clinical Implications

The nutrient vascular foramina of scaphoid bone were observed and clinical interpretations were discussed. The 220 dry scaphoid bones of adult age group were studied. The vascular foramina distal to mid of waist were 1 to 2 in 17.72 % specimen and rest of 82.28% bones had more then 2 foramina. There was no scaphoid without vascular foramina distal to mid of waist of scaphoid. But the proximal p...

Investigating the supratrochlear foramen and septum in adult humerus bones: brief report

Background: The supratrochlear foramen (STF) is an important and relatively common anatomic variation in the lower end of the humerus in humans. In recent years it has become clear that STF should be emphasized because anatomical knowledge of STF is useful for anatomists, anthropologists, orthopedic surgeons, and radiologists. The anatomical structure of the humerus may play an important role i...
